Waterdrop A2 Review (2026): Hot, Cold & RO Filtration in One Countertop Unit

The only countertop RO that also functions as an instant water heater — 59°F iced water to 203°F near-boiling, all through the same RO-purified and UV-C sterilized system. No plumbing required.

Our verdict

The best countertop unit for buyers who want hot water too

Every other countertop RO — AquaTru, K19, SimPure Y9A — gives you filtered water at room temperature or cold. The WD-A2 gives you all of that plus instant hot water from 113°F to 203°F through the same purified water system. For a home office, small kitchen, or apartment where both a kettle and a water filter take up counter space, this replaces both in one unit. The trade-off: it’s larger than a standard countertop RO, the 1.25-gallon feed tank needs frequent refilling at high use, and the 1,530W heater draws meaningful power. If you only want filtered cold water, the K19 is cheaper and more compact. But if hot water matters, nothing else in the countertop RO category does what the A2 does.

Watch: Waterdrop A2 Overview

What the A2 does that no other countertop RO can

Instant hot water from 113°F to 203°F — The 1,530W heating element delivers water at your selected temperature without waiting for a kettle to boil. Six presets plus custom mode in 9°F steps cover warm water for baby formula, 185°F for tea, and 203°F for French press or instant noodles.
Refrigerated cold water at 59°F — A built-in refrigeration compressor chills purified water to ice water temperature. This isn’t just cool tap water — it’s actively refrigerated. The compressor runs intermittently to maintain temperature; audible cycling noise is normal and expected.
💧
RO filtration at 100 GPD — The WD-A2RF membrane filters tap water through reverse osmosis before any water is stored, heated, or chilled. Hot water in particular is often reheated tap water in other dispensers; here the water is RO-purified first.
UV-C sterilization — Built-in UV-C lamp activates during dispensing for an additional layer of pathogen reduction on top of the RO membrane. Provides protection against any bacteria that might grow in the internal pure water pitcher between uses.
🔒
Child lock on all temperatures above 113°F — Mandatory two-step confirmation required before dispensing hot water. The Hot Water Key quick-shortcut activates the child lock automatically. This is a hardware safety feature, not just a setting.
🔗
Zero plumbing — Fills from a removable 1.25-gallon (4.7L) feed water tank. Place it anywhere with an outlet. No under-sink connection, no drilling, no landlord permission needed.

Setup & First Use

The WD-A2 requires no plumbing but does require a mandatory first-use flush before the filtered water is safe to drink. The flush removes manufacturing residues, carbon fines, and air from the system. Budget 20–30 minutes for initial setup.

1
Install the WD-A2RF filter — Press down until you hear a click confirming the sealed connection. Replace the body cover plate.
2
Fill the feed water tank to the MAX line — Use municipal tap water. Do not overfill.
3
Run the first-use flush (3–4 full cycles) — Place a container of at least 52 oz under the outlet. Connect power — flushing begins automatically. When the pure water pitcher fills, the Water Filtering Indicator flashes. Tap Water Dispensing Key to continue. Repeat 3–4 times until flush progress reaches 100%. Do not drink water from the first flush cycles.
4
Ready to use when flush reaches 100% — Select your temperature, select your volume, press the Water Dispensing Key.

Daily Operation

Every dispense follows the same four-step sequence. All settings are retained between uses — only change what needs adjusting.

  1. Touch the Water Dispensing Key (droplet icon) to wake the display
  2. Tap Cup Volume Key — select 4, 8, 16, 20, or Max oz. Long-press for custom 4–32 oz
  3. Tap Temperature Key — cycle through the six presets. Long-press for custom 59–203°F in 9°F steps
  4. Press Water Dispensing Key — dispenses and stops at your set volume automatically

Quick shortcuts: Tap the Hot Water Key directly to jump to 203°F. Tap Cold Water Key directly to jump to 59°F. Press any key during dispensing to pause.

Child Lock — Hot Water Safety

The child lock is mandatory for all temperatures at or above 113°F and cannot be disabled. Two distinct lock modes:

Lock ModeWhen ActiveHow to Unlock
Permanent LockActivated by long-pressing Lock Key for 5 sec; remains active after power cycleLong-press Lock Key 5 sec; unlock key flashes 3 times, then press dispense
Temporary LockActivates automatically each time a temperature ≥113°F is selected or Hot Water Key is pressedPress unlock icon once; then press dispense within the active window

Filter Maintenance

Filter modelWD-A2RF (RO Membrane Filter)
Rated life12 months or 1,000 gallons — whichever comes first
TrackingFilter life indicator on display panel — monitors automatically from installation
Replacement procedureRemove body cover → lift old filter out → press new filter in until click → replace cover → hold Dispense Key 5 sec to reset counter
Extended storageRemove filter; store in airtight bag in refrigerator (not freezer). Drain feed tank and internal pitcher. Run 3–4 flush cycles before drinking on return to service.

At feedwater TDS above 300 mg/L, filter life may be shorter than the rated 12 months. If your tap water is high in dissolved solids, monitor the filter indicator and replace earlier if water taste or TDS output deteriorates.

Advanced Features Worth Knowing

Favorite Mode

Save any temperature and volume combination as a one-touch shortcut. Long-press the Favorite Key (star icon) for 2 seconds, set your preferred temperature and volume, then save by holding the Favorite Key again or pressing Dispense. The saved combination appears on the display at startup. Ideal for a daily routine drink order.

Boiling Point Correction (High Altitude)

At elevations above 500 m (1,640 ft), water boils below 203°F — which means steam can form before the preset temperature is reached, creating a scalding risk. Hold Temperature Key + Volume Key together for 5 seconds to enter adjustment mode, then use the Hot Water Key to select the appropriate maximum from 176°F, 185°F, 194°F, or 203°F. Setting is retained after power off. Denver (5,280 ft) and similar elevations should set this to 185°F or 194°F.

Refrigeration Toggle

The cold water refrigeration system can be toggled off to reduce power consumption and eliminate compressor noise when iced water isn’t needed. Long-press Water Dispensing Key + Cold Water Key together for 5 seconds to toggle. The unit will still filter and heat water normally when refrigeration is off — cold water simply won’t be available.

Automatic Flush Cycles

The WD-A2 runs automated flush cycles without user intervention to maintain RO membrane health and water freshness in the internal pitcher. These cycles run based on time intervals regardless of use. Audible flushing sounds during these cycles are normal. Ensure the feed tank is kept filled to allow automatic flushing to complete.
