Waterdrop N1 Countertop RO Review (2026)

Our verdict — 9.03/10 independent lab rating

Best countertop RO for renters who want zero installation, genuine RO filtration, and low ongoing costs. NSF certification depth is the only meaningful gap vs AquaTru.

Water Filter Guru’s independent SimpleLab lab testing scored the N1 at 9.03/10 overall, with a 9.60 for health contaminants and a perfect 10/10 for maintenance. The 90%+ TDS rejection, UV sterilization, and 3:1 pure-to-drain ratio are genuinely strong. The honest limitations: 0.1 GPM dispensing is slow, it holds no NSF P473 microplastics certification, and it doesn’t remineralize.

    What we like

  • 9.03/10 independent lab rating — Water Filter Guru
  • Zero installation — plug in and go
  • 90%+ TDS rejection (PFAS, lead, fluoride, nitrates)
  • Built-in UV sterilization (hourly)
  • Smart display — real-time TDS, filter life indicators
  • Only 2 filters — 10/10 maintenance score
  • $0.09/gallon filter cost (among lowest countertop RO)
  • 3:1 pure-to-drain ratio

    What to know

  • 0.1 GPM is slow — 7.5/10 filtration rate score
  • No NSF P473 certification (microplastics) — AquaTru has it
  • No remineralization — output is low-mineral soft water
  • City/municipal water only — not compatible with well water
  • Manual tank refill required (no supply line connection)

"The N1 performed a superb job eliminating nearly all tested contaminants" — Water Filter Guru. The 7.5/10 filtration rate score reflects the 0.1 GPM dispensing speed, which is the N1’s main practical limitation.
ContaminantN1 Performance
TDS rejection90%+ (lab-tested; real-time TDS display on front panel confirms performance)
PFAS / PFOA / PFOSSignificant reduction (RO membrane; listed in Waterdrop specs)
LeadSignificant reduction (heavy metal; KDF media + RO membrane)
FluorideSignificant reduction (RO membrane; one of the most effective residential technologies for fluoride)
Chlorine / ChloramineNear-complete reduction — 9.90/10 aesthetic score; CF carbon block handles both
ArsenicSignificant reduction (RO membrane; 0.0001-micron pore size)
NitratesSignificant reduction (RO membrane rejects ionic contaminants)
Bacteria / VirusesSignificant reduction (RO membrane physically blocks; UV sterilizes storage tank hourly)
ChromiumSignificant reduction (both trivalent and hexavalent)
RadiumSignificant reduction (RO membrane)
No remineralization — important for some buyers: The RO membrane removes beneficial minerals (calcium, magnesium) along with contaminants. Output is very low-TDS, slightly acidic, demineralized water. If you prefer mineral-rich or alkaline water, the N1 doesn’t have a built-in remineralization stage. Consider the AquaTru Carafe with optional alkaline filter, or the iSpring RCC7AK for under-sink use.

How the N1 Filters Water — 4 Stages

The N1 achieves 90%+ TDS rejection through a 4-stage train packaged in just two cartridges. This simplified approach is why the N1 scores 10/10 for maintenance — there are only two filter parts numbers to remember and one tool-free swap per cartridge.

The Concentrated Water Return — Why Your Feed Tank TDS Keeps Rising

The N1 recycles concentrate (reject) water back into the feed water tank rather than sending it to a drain. This is what enables the 3:1 pure-to-drain efficiency ratio. The trade-off: the TDS of your feed tank will steadily rise during filtration cycles as concentrated water is returned. This is normal designed behavior — not a malfunction.

What to expect: Purified water output should read 5–10% of your feed water tank TDS. When it climbs to 15–20% of feed TDS, it’s time to replace filters. The L1 alert means feed water TDS has exceeded 99 ppm and the tank needs emptying — pour it out and refill with fresh tap water.

Post-replacement flush is mandatory. After any filter change, 102 oz of water must be discharged before the water is drinkable. The full flush takes approximately 8 minutes. Water dispensed during flushing is NOT safe to drink — discard it. Always reset the filter life indicator (5-second button hold) — it does not reset automatically.

The N1 wins on price, UV sterilization, smart display, and maintenance simplicity. AquaTru leads on NSF certification depth, independent lab score, and the glass storage option (Carafe). For most buyers the AquaTru Classic remains the top countertop RO recommendation; the N1 is the right call if you want UV sterilization built in, a real-time TDS display, or prefer Waterdrop’s design ecosystem.

Who the N1 Is Right For

✓ Good fit
  • Renters — zero installation, no plumber
  • Buyers who want UV sterilization built in
  • City/municipal water users
  • PFAS and lead concerns
  • Buyers who want the simplest filter maintenance (2 parts, smart indicators)
  • Budget-conscious buyers ($150 less than AquaTru Classic)
✗ Consider alternatives
  • Well water users — N1 is not compatible
  • NSF P473 (microplastics) required — get AquaTru
