The three things that matter most

Always discard tap tank water. Always press Filter Reset after replacing a filter. Always keep the unit plugged in.

  • Discard every time. The remaining water in the tap tank is concentrated waste water, not reusable tap water. Refilling on top of it causes rapid scale buildup and voids the warranty.
  • Press Filter Reset after every filter installation. Without this step, the AquaTru cannot track the new filter’s life. Hold the button for 3–5 seconds on the back of the unit until the indicator turns off.
  • Keep the unit plugged in. AquaTru tracks filter life based on water volume processed. When unplugged, it cannot track — filter life indicators become inaccurate.

Hard water warning — maximum 10 GPG (171 mg/L)

If your water hardness exceeds 10 GPG, lime scale will build up rapidly on the RO membrane, plugging it and making the system ineffective. AquaTru does not recommend use above 10 GPG unless the water is softened before pouring into the tap water tank. Test your hardness with a water test kit and use AquaTru Descaling Powder proactively if you’re in a hard water area.

4-stage filtration process

The AquaTru Classic filters water through 4 stages before it reaches the tank. Understanding which stage does what helps you diagnose taste problems and prioritize which filter to replace.

4-Stage Purification Process
STAGES 1–2

The tap tank discard rule — the most important habit

⚠️
ALWAYS discard the tap tank water before refilling

The AquaTru concentrates contaminants in the tap water tank during filtration. The remaining water in that tank is highly concentrated waste water — not just unconcentrated tap water. Refilling on top of it accelerates scale buildup and voids the warranty.

1️⃣
Remove tap water tank from base
2️⃣
Discard ALL remaining water
3️⃣
Refill with fresh cold tap water & reinstall

When the Empty & Refill Tap Tank indicator lights up, the tap tank has approximately one-quarter of water remaining. This is the concentrated waste water — discard it entirely. Refill fresh cold tap water to just below the tank handle. Reinstall.

Critical: Discard first 2 full tanks after any filter replacement

After installing any new filter, you must run and discard 4 full flush cycles from first install, or 2 full filtered water tanks after replacement, before drinking. This flushes carbon fines and manufacturing residue from new filter media. Do not skip this step.

Step-by-step filter replacement

Removal steps
  1. Open the side panel (lift from bottom)
  2. Wait 60 seconds to depressurize
  3. Pivot filter outward to improve access
  4. Remove old filter by turning counter-clockwise
Installation steps
  1. If filter is hard to thread: wet the O-ring under cold water for a few seconds
  2. Line up RED arrow on filter with RED arrow on base
  3. Turn clockwise until tightly seated
  4. Pivot filter to upright position; close side panel
  5. Press and hold Filter Reset Button (back of unit) for 3–5 seconds until indicator turns off
  6. Discard first 2 full filtered water tanks

Manual (early) filter reset

To reset a filter before the Change Filter indicator activates:

  1. Press and hold Filter Reset Button for 10 seconds until all 3 filter indicators light up
  2. A single press moves to the next filter indicator (1–2 → 3 → 4 → back to 1–2)
  3. Once the filter you want to reset is blinking, hold the button for 3–5 seconds — the light blinks rapidly to confirm reset
  4. If you decide not to reset any filter, leave untouched for 15 seconds; unit automatically exits reset mode

Maintenance alert — causes and solutions

The Maintenance light activates when one full tank takes longer than 30 minutes to filter. Normal is 12–15 minutes. Check in this order:

1
Check tap water tank for hard water scale

Remove and inspect the tap tank for white scale deposits. Fill a clean tap tank with cold fresh water, place on base, empty the filtered tank, and time one full filtration cycle. If it takes 20–30 minutes, you have high TDS water. Descale the tap tank with AquaTru Descaling Powder (Part #10AT01CADK06) or equal parts warm water and white distilled vinegar. Soak 30–60 minutes, scrub with a non-abrasive sponge, rinse thoroughly.

2
Descale the unit and RO membrane

If filtration is still slow after cleaning the tap tank, scale has built up inside the unit or on the RO membrane. Use the AquaTru Descaling Kit (Part# 90AT01DK01) and follow the kit instructions for the full internal descaling process. After descaling, filter one full tank and time it again. If still over 30 minutes, replace the RO filter (AT2002) regardless of whether the Change Filter indicator is lit.

3
Valve malfunction — contact support

If no water is filtering through at all after descaling and RO replacement, a valve malfunction requires service. Contact AquaTru: 800.220.6570 or cs@aquatru.com. A valve malfunction requires support diagnosis — do not attempt internal repairs.

Descaling — complete instructions

Tap water tank scale (hard water deposits)

With AquaTru Descaling Powder
Part #10AT01CADK06
  1. Fill tank with warm water + 1 Descaling Powder packet
  2. Let soak 1 hour
  3. Scrub with non-abrasive sponge — wash tank valve at bottom
  4. Rinse thoroughly before reinstalling
With white vinegar (alternative)
Distilled white vinegar only
  1. Equal parts warm water + white distilled vinegar
  2. Soak 30 minutes to 1 hour
  3. Scrub with non-abrasive sponge
  4. Rinse very thoroughly before reinstalling

Internal unit descaling (for Maintenance alert)

Use the AquaTru Descaling Kit (Part# 90AT01DK01) for internal descaling. Follow the kit instructions specifically — the process is different from tap tank descaling and requires running the solution through the system, not just soaking. Order at AquaTru.com.

Nitrate/Nitrite testing — NSF 58 requirement

Required by NSF/ANSI 58

Under certain conditions, Nitrate/Nitrite removal efficiency can drop even while all other contaminants remain well-controlled. AquaTru is certified against NSF 58 and must allow users to verify RO performance for Nitrate/Nitrite specifically.

Test every 6 months or whenever you change the Pre/Carbon Filter. Free Nitrate/Nitrite test strips available at: aquatruwater.com/nitratetesting. If Nitrate/Nitrite exceeds safe levels, replace the RO filter (AT2002) immediately.

Frequently asked questions

The Maintenance light activates when one full tank is taking more than 30 minutes to filter (normal is 12–15 minutes). Check in order: (1) Scale in the tap tank — descale with Descaling Powder (Part #10AT01CADK06) or vinegar. (2) Scale inside the unit or on the RO membrane — use the AquaTru Descaling Kit (Part# 90AT01DK01). (3) Valve malfunction — contact AquaTru at 800.220.6570 if still unresolved after descaling and RO filter replacement.
Yes, every time without exception. The AquaTru concentrates contaminants in the tap water tank during filtration. When the refill indicator lights up, the remaining water in the tank is highly concentrated waste water — not regular tap water. Refilling on top of it causes rapid scale buildup on internal parts and the RO membrane, and voids the warranty. Remove the tank, discard ALL remaining water, and fill fresh.
After replacing a filter, press and hold the Filter Reset Button on the back of the unit for 3–5 seconds until the filter indicator light turns off. If you don’t press this button, the light will stay on and the AquaTru won’t track the new filter’s life accurately. Keep the unit plugged in at all times — when unplugged, the unit can’t track water volume processed and filter life indicators become unreliable.
For tap tank scale: fill with warm water and one packet of AquaTru Descaling Powder (Part #10AT01CADK06), soak 1 hour, scrub with a non-abrasive sponge, rinse thoroughly. Or use equal parts warm water and white distilled vinegar. For scale inside the unit (causing the Maintenance alert): use the AquaTru Descaling Kit (Part# 90AT01DK01) — this is a different process that runs the descaling solution through the entire system. Order both products at AquaTru.com.
Two main causes: (1) If you just installed a new VOC Carbon filter, run four flush tanks — carbon fines from new media temporarily raise TDS and the taste is off. This is normal and resolves quickly. (2) If the RO filter is aging, TDS rejection typically drops below 80% (output TDS more than 20% of source TDS). If that’s the case, replace the RO filter (AT2002) even if the Change Filter indicator hasn’t lit up yet.
Completely normal. The white cloud is micro air bubbles released by the RO membrane during filtration. The water is not contaminated. You may see this during every use — it clears on its own as the bubbles dissipate. This is noted specifically in the AquaTru owner’s manual as expected and harmless behavior.
