What GPD actually measures
GPD stands for gallons per day. In a reverse osmosis system it is the rated daily production capacity of the RO membrane — how many gallons the membrane can theoretically produce in 24 hours of continuous operation under controlled lab conditions.
The lab conditions matter: GPD ratings are measured at 77°F water temperature, 60–65 psi inlet pressure, and 500 ppm TDS source water. Change any of those variables — which your house almost certainly will — and actual production drops. Cold water is the biggest factor: a membrane rated 400 GPD at 77°F may produce 200–250 GPD in a 55°F basement.

GPD means different things on tank vs. tankless systems
This is where most buyers get confused. The same GPD number means something completely different depending on the system type.
Tank-based RO systems
The membrane fills a pressure tank slowly over hours. GPD determines how fast the tank refills — not faucet speed. The faucet draws from the stored tank at 0.3–0.5 GPM regardless of membrane GPD.
Example: A 50 GPD membrane and a 400 GPD membrane both give you the same faucet speed — the tank empties at the same rate either way. The 400 GPD tank just refills faster.
Sweet spot: 50–100 GPD is plenty for most tank systems — the tank refills overnight regardless.
Tankless RO systems
No storage tank — the membrane produces water on demand when you open the faucet. GPD directly determines how fast water comes out. Higher GPD = faster faucet.
Example: A 400 GPD tankless fills a glass noticeably slower than a 800 GPD tankless. You feel the difference.
Sweet spot: 400–600 GPD for most households. Above 800 GPD is diminishing returns for typical use.
How much GPD do you actually need?
Most households draw 3–10 gallons of RO water per day through a drinking faucet. That's drinking, cooking, and coffee — not filling the pool. The GPD rating only becomes meaningful when demand approaches that ceiling.

Why your system produces less than the rated GPD
If your actual production is below the listed GPD, it's almost certainly not a fault. GPD ratings assume ideal conditions that most homes don't match.
Cold water temperature
Biggest factorRated at 77°F. At 50°F, production can be 40–50% lower. A 400 GPD membrane in a cold basement may produce 220–250 GPD. Normal — not a fault.
Low inlet pressure
Rated at 60–65 psi. Below 40 psi, production drops noticeably and rejection rate worsens. Below 30 psi, the system struggles. A booster pump solves this.
High TDS source water
Rated at 500 ppm TDS. Higher TDS means the membrane works harder to reject more dissolved solids — production rate decreases as rejection increases.
Membrane age
A membrane approaching end of life produces less and rejects less. Falling GPD over time is a signal to replace it — especially if TDS at the tap is rising.
Clogged pre-filters
A saturated sediment or carbon pre-filter restricts flow before it reaches the membrane. If GPD drops suddenly, check pre-filter condition before assuming membrane failure.
Does GPD affect the waste ratio?
No — these are independent specifications. A 600 GPD system can have a 2:1 or 3:1 waste ratio. A 50 GPD system can have the same. The waste ratio tells you how many gallons go to drain for every gallon produced. GPD tells you how many gallons per day the membrane produces. Both matter when comparing systems but neither determines the other.
A system with 600 GPD and a 3:1 ratio is meaningfully more efficient than one with 600 GPD and a 2:1 ratio — it produces the same amount of water while sending less to drain. Don't compare GPD without also checking the waste ratio.
